A dangerous decision: tell the White House, No War with Iran

Earlier today, I posted on FORpeace.net some initial information about the Fellowship of Reconciliation's sixth civilian diplomacy delegation to Iran, including the names of the participants and the first report submitted to us. A major challenge for the delegation while in the country was its lack of access to the internet. There were doubtlessly many reasons for this problem, one of which might have been the fact that this week was the big parliamentary elections in Iran -- and as in many countries, the Iranian government tends to restrict access to media around elections.

Another concerning piece of current news this week vis-a-vis Iran was the resignation of a key U.S. military leader. FOR has worked closely in the past year with Just Foreign Policy, and as FOR leader Richard Deats wrote today, that organization has asked all of us to contact our legislators in Washington on this critical issue:

Admiral William Fallon was a voice of reason arguing against a reckless attack on Iran. His recent resignation, seemingly under pressure from the White House, is very troubling.

I just sent a letter to my Senators and Representative asking them not to allow the President to attack Iran unless he has Congressional authorization. Legislation has been introduced that would do this. Can you write your Senators and Representative to ask them to support it?

Now that the delegaction is back in the U.S., some of its members are posting regular pieces on the internet. Carah Ong of the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation maintains a blog tiled "Iran Nuclear Watch" and has already written five interesting reflections. One of them described being temporarily detained, along with herhusband, by Iranian plain-clothes police officers when taking photos that were deemed inappropriate. Today's excellent entry is titled, "Women's Rights Are No Joke."

Freelance investigative journalist Robert Dreyfuss has a powerful, lengthy article in last week's issue of The Nation, "Is Iran Winning the Iraq War?," which was written prior to the departure of the delegation to Iran. Dreyfuss will doubtlessly be publishing several pieces in various magazines and on his blog in the near future.

More to come soon.
