SOA and the candidates
I just got an update from SOA Watch saying that Dennis Kucinich will be participating in the vigil this weekend. That's great! The Nation recently published an article evaluating all of the Democratic presidential candidates' positions on the School of the Americas.
Reporter Patrick Mulvaney surveyed each campaign, and he found that only Kucinich and Mike Gravel would pledge to close the School of the Americas. (Notably, Republican/libertarian Ron Paul says he would close the SOA... along with the IRS, FEMA, and the Department of Education.) Barack Obama and Christopher Dodd would support additional investigation of the School. Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, and Bill Richardson only made general statements about supporting human rights without addressing the SOA specifically, and Joe Biden's campaign declined to respond.
It's disappointing that more candidates aren't ready to end the United States' long history of anti-democratic military intervention in Latin America. We have to keep the pressure up...
