Today, September 21st, is known as the International Day of Peace, and with Congress and the U.N. back in session the nation's attention is turning toward ending the war. In a recent e-mail we highlighted some of many opportunities in the next month for nonviolent action to raise social and political pressure to call for an end to the violence and destruction in Iraq.

Iraq Moratorium

The Iraq Moratorium will be an escalating monthly series of actions demanding an end to the war. Starting on Friday, September 21 and on the third Friday of every month thereafter, we will take the time to show our President and Congress that our troops must be brought home, now!
Pledge: On Friday September 21 & the Third Friday of every subsequent month, I will break my daily routine and take some action, by myself or with others, to end the War in Iraq.

Christian Peace Witness Continuous Vigil

A Constant Vigil to End the Occupation. On September 16, Christian Peace Witness for Iraq began a faith-based plea for our government to withdraw soldiers from Iraq and shift budget resources to provide for humanitarian assistance. Through a Continuous Prayer Vigil we witness against the occupation with a common message: we oppose this war because of our deep-rooted faith and belief that God’s peace is the right of every human being.
United for Peace and Justice Legislative Action
Ask your representative to sign on to the Bi-Partisan Letter to President Bush. The original letter was sent on July 19 with 70 signatures, an updated version with added signatures will be sent to the President in late September.
Dear Mr. President:
We are writing to inform you that we will only support appropriating additional funds for U.S. military operations in Iraq during Fiscal Year 2008 and beyond for the protection and safe redeployment of all our troops out of Iraq before you leave office...
Action: Ask your member of congress to sign on now.
Petition: Sign the pledge for peace to ask Congress to stop funding the occupation.
Interfaith Fast to End the War in Iraq

Religious leaders from several traditions invite you to join with millions of other Americans participating in interfaith events in your local community on October 7 and 8th, for the breaking of bread, fasting, and breaking our fast together as we covenant together to live out the deepest calling in each of our traditions - the desire for justice and for peace for all people.
Fast: Participate by abstaining on October 8th and attending a local event.
Organize: Host an event in your community.
