Pageantry of Peace

[photo] The Puppetista group has been working on a puppet based pageant for the SOA Watch Vigil over the past week. The resulting drama celebrates the life of Companera Rufina Amaya, sole survivor of the El Mozote massacre in El Salvador, who passed away this year, through a story of corn as the symbol of Life and Regeneration. The story line of the group dramatizes this thought: “Like many colors of kernels on the an ear of corn, we are from many differenct backgrounds. Like stalks of corn in a field, we will pollinate one another’s organizing with new ideas. Together, we will resist oppression and plant seeds of hope in the fertile ground of our loud calls for justice.”

FOR Colombia Peace Program accompaniment returnee, Mireille Evans was a part of program as a character on stilts, first symbolizing death as a bird, and then life and regeneration as she danced on stilts in front of a giant puppet of Rufina Amaya.
